Once upon a time I was a compulsive news consumer, particularly foreign policy and international relations. I had mostly broken the habit, and then we all ended up getting to watch the beginnings of WWIII and the end of the American Empire. Back then I blogged at the defunct sites of Scholars & Rogues as well The Agonist (editor at The Agonist for a while). I wasn’t big in the old school blog scene, a minor player with a few nods from the movers and shakers at FDL and C&L, etc. The good old days weren’t actually all that good and they’re gone now; replaced by the thoughtlessness of social media and corporate news. So here we are, somewhere to think out loud.
I’m an admitted Russophile, history nerd, three time expat and decliner of a job offer as an FSO at the State Department. That was 2002 and I couldn’t bring myself to being part of the empire in the direction it was clearly headed. It’s not that fun being right on a regular basis. We can only hope that I start being wrong, a lot.
